Whether your family/friend circle is large or small, the holiday rush affects all of us. Each year seems faster than the last. And though you may cringe at the sight of stores all decked out for Christmas in October, I must disagree. It’s more like a glittery reminder to me. Telling me that the countdown has started and Christmas is near. So ready or not it’s time to shop. Here are some tips and tricks to put the Merry back into your Christmas Holiday.

Tip & Trick #1 Make a list: No Santa Clause reference intended. But I am a huge fan of list making. It frees up brain space for more important things (like learning Christmas carols, of course). Sure you know who you normally get gifts for each year. But making a list will not only prevent you from forgetting that new friend or distance relative, but you’ll also be able to keep track of your progress.

Tip & Trick #2 Set a budget: Yes, it would be wonderful to get our loved ones anything their hearts desire. But the reality is that we can. And this time of year isn’t meant to be one of debt and despair either. So take a look at that lovely list and decide how much you can (and want) to spend on each person. Then stick to it.

Tip & Trick #3 Keep the recipient in mind: Many people give gifts that they’d like. And while the saying is true, it’s the thought that counts. We should remember that our thoughts should be on the person who will be receiving our gift. So if you don’t know what music they like or what size they wear just ask around. Surprising someone by giving a gift that shows them that you are aware of their taste, or remember that one conversation about that item that just had to have is in itself another gift. And it cost nothing.

Tip & Trick #4 Ship Direct: If you are sending gifts out of state it is important to get those gifts first. It would also be beneficial to do all of that shopping online too so the stores can ship your gifts directly. And most companies have a gift wrapping opinions too. No mess, no stress. Just make sure that you tell the recipient to be on the look out for its delivery.

Tip & Trick #5 Divide and conquer: If you have a long list of gifts to buy there are many ways to get it done. If you are heading out, I suggest getting the whole family involved. Choose just a few names from your gift list, so you’re not out all day. Then divide up into teams, if possible, and shop, shop, shop. It’s fun to see what gift ideas everyone comes up with. And it also provides an opportunity for you to search for a little something for each other (if they’re off doing their own shopping of course).

So whether you’re shopping at home in your pj’s or making it a family outing remembering these tips will help lessen the stress that seems to overwhelm so many. Enjoy this special time of year and stay mindful on what it is truly all about.
