The idea of getting a car can be exciting, but for those of us who know better we realize that the process is a headache. My hubby and I decided that we’d do as much research as possible before buying a vehicle. We looked at our choices and compared models online which was a lot less stressful at home where there wasn’t a sale person breathing down your neck trying to push a sale.
Shopping around online before we stepped foot onto a dealership lot brought back the fun in car shopping. I looked over tons of pictures of SUVs that would fit our families needs, saw the choices of colors (interior/exterior) and other options. We knew our facts and our price range. We dedicated what our deal breakers were and what things were nice to have but necessary. Don’t forget that you could always add certain features on (new radio, fog lights, etc.) yourself and usually at half the price.
Our requirements were fairly straightforward; SUV with 3rd-row seating, AC controls/vents for backseat passengers (because summers can get pretty hot here). We’d get a ‘used’ SUV with no more than 50,000 miles, it would have to get better gas mileage than what we’re currently getting from our trade-in. And the exterior color could only be white, silver, or gray. I know this isn’t an important feature to some, but that’s what I wanted. So after months of waiting, preparing, comparing, narrowing our list down to two vehicles, and saving we were finally ready to go for a test drive. I was excited, but promised myself that if the car didn’t drive well, didn’t meet our requirements, or the price wasn’t right then I’d be willing to walk away. So with ALL of our kids in tow we headed out.
At the dealership (let’s call it Rick Moreno), the paperwork and financing was all done up front. This was different than what we were use to (and boring), but at least it got out of the way. Then it was time to check out the cars. They only had one of the vehicles I wanted to see, so we checked it out from top to bottom. It had a burgundy exterior and a cream colored interior (Strike 1 & 2). There were also a few imperfections, (which we expected) but the mileage was too high (Strike 3). But I still needed to drive it to know if the model would stay on my list.
Of course most SUVs now at days drive smooth (more like a car than a truck). So I was very pleased with that; it would remain on my list for now. We still needed to go somewhere and test drive the other vehicle on my list, so we were off to another dealership. The next day we went to a different car lot (Jones Auto Mall) to test car #2. To my surprise I loved it even more than the first SUV I drove the day before. It drove just as well and had more room inside. But we weren’t going to get this car from Jones, (our credit had already been run by Rick Moreno). We preferred them only because we knew they could get us our any vehicle, and at a better price.
Now we knew which vehicle was the winner. My husband; being the great researcher that he is found out that Moreno’s did have the same vehicle, but at a different location. So he got on the phone with them to see if we could have it arrange to be brought over. After hours of more paper work and hammering out final details we had a deal…and we hadn’t even physically seen it.
Now we’re not crazy, the contract was on contingent on everything being how we expected it to be (looks, mileage, etc).
It was weird leaving the Moreno dealership knowing we had bought a vehicle, but not having it. And after waiting for what seemed like a lifetime (not even three days) we were back. And I can say that’s doing our homework, being patient, and staying within our budget has made each and every time I get behind the wheel that much sweeter.

Thanks for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do some research on this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such excellent information being shared freely out there.
You have mentioned very interesting details! ps nice web site.
I actually had the same exact discussion with Sachie, John, and Maxim. I’m graduating in May and still can’t recall a real application in class of the theories learned in Finance. I could do that with other classes which helped me a lot but unfortunately not in my major. All the projects we worked on are more to get better at working in team than to understand the materiel and see the use of it. Especially when I compare myself to my friends back home who studied in schools of business and where they get much more practise as Finance majors. I was hoping to see the training ground you are talking about before my last year in Whitewater but let’s hope for one for the next Business major students to come!
Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is magnificent blog. An excellent read. I will certainly be back.|
