I’m very blessed to have healthy, smart children. But why is there always one who gets things quickly, excels in everything…but is straight up lazy. It’s hard to understand a child that is gifted yet chooses not to apply their abilities.
For kids that have a hard time reading, or those who don’t get math, I can understand why they would want to avoid the work and even dread it (though I don’t believe in quitting). But this kid doesn’t have any of those reasons to justify why chores aren’t done correctly, or why homework is turned in late, if at all.
This child (who I’ll re-frame from naming, because I don’t think tearing down a child is ever beneficial) is amazing and I can see that one day they’ll be taking me to school with their knowledge and ability to recall things, yet this is the same child who is choosing the make life harder for themselves.
In our house the less work you try to do (or simply do intentionally wrong) only gets them more work. We are trying to teach our children that responsibilities are apart of growing up whether they like it or not.
I know without a doubt this child will do great things and my fear, as I’m sure it is for many parents, is will those ‘things’ be good, or bad. Unfortunately, kids don’t realize that the decisions they make today can do more than just shape tomorrow. Those decisions can have a real lasting impact on their future.
So our job as parents is to fight through the tears and craziness we feel and go to work (on our kids that is). Adding more rules, limiting more things as needed, but at the same time rewarding even the smallest victories, and acknowledge all improvements. Parenthood is not for the faint of heart and if you’re as blessed as I am you have a few good friends to vent to. The kind of friend who won’t judge the crazy things you say or the wild punishments you come up with (that you’ll of course never do, cause you’re actually not crazy). The family who will stand by you and help you through it all without it changing how they view or love that child.
So I don’t know about you, but I’m going to pick myself up by my boot straps, knock some sense into my kid, not literally, and have a heart to heart. Asking questions and actually listening to the answers. Find out if there is more to the story then what I already know. Then we’ll work together to make today better then yesterday and keep moving onward and upward.
If your child is struggling in school, don’t sit on the sidelines. Make them accountable, get them any extra assistants they may need, and just like you support them, make sure there is someone there to support you too 🙂
