Over this past Thanksgiving holiday, my husband and I decided to load up our car and head out on our first family road trip. It was a six hour drive (one way). We did our best to only pack clothing and shoes that we’d be using and loaded it all in the car the night before. I don’t know how many times we’ve forgotten something simply because we waited until the last-minute to put it in the car. And when you’re packing for four kids and two adults the amount of bags can start to add up.
When it came to this trip, I like to joke and say that I treated it (much like I do everything) as a mission. No doubt I’ve inherited this attitude from my father. Using the K.I.S.S. method; Keep It Simply S (let’s say the last S is for silly).
No matter the ages of your passengers there are two basic needs on a road trip, snacks and entertainment. When it came to road trip snacks, I pretty much throw everything I normally do out the window. Yes, mom I still pack some healthy treats, but this trip was a special occasion. Packing finger foods and yummy snacks and treats that they normally not get to indulge in had them excited. Side Note: Make sure your kids enjoy drinks when you know you’ll be taking a pit stop within the next hour or so. It will help prevent any roadside shows if you catch my meaning.
For entertainment we had our kids choose a few movies each, ensuring that everyone would have a turn watching something they’d like. If you don’t have a DVD player in your car, not to worry. Bring your laptop along is an easy and inexpensive solution. And many cars have plugins so your laptop will stay up and running for the whole trip. Just make sure you have the right cords. Then place it in a safe position way everyone (in the backseat, of course) can see it.
For non electric entertainment stop by your local Dollar Store, or Target (preferably before your trip) and click out their dollar bins. You can pick up fun coloring activities, word searches, etc. at a great price. Because a person, even a huge Disney fan like myself, can only stand Aladdin’s Whole New World song so many times.
Of course, when traveling with a little ones you’ll want to make sure you have everything you need within. Pack some of their favorite toys that have sound and light up. Also dress them in clothes that make diaper changes easy. Well as easy as roadside diaper changes go that is.
Road trips are only as successful as the planning behind it. So try leaving during a time when your kids can still catch some z’s. And take everything in stride. There may very well be meltdowns (both theirs and yours), or unexpected stops and delays. But just remember that the destination is just one small part of your trip, so enjoy the journey.
Dear Lord, I pray that anyone traveling this holiday season would be shown traveling mercies. Let the frustration, stress, and even sadness that many may be facing at this time melt away. Help us keep the true reason for the season in our hearts. May we share the love, joy, and peace we have with others. -Amen
