As exhausting as the life of a parent is, it’s surprising how hard it is to get a good nights sleep. Sometimes we drag the days events to bed with us, and they’re far from a lullaby. In my experience, one bad night’s sleep can lead to a day of trouble, headaches, and tears. For all involved. Through trial and error, I have learned a few tips for falling asleep. So let’s bring on those z’s.

  1. Go to bed at the same time every night– I have a set time that my children start their night time routine. Having toys picked up, and dishes put away is required. And knowing that their teeth are brushed, and everyone is in bed is great. Allowing my husband and I about an hour of kid-free time each night. But like the kids, if I push past my own appointed time frame I pay dearly the next day. So when it’s time for bed there’s no fighting or crying from me.
  2. Cut out late night snacks– Ok, so I haven’t completely mastered this one. But it is important, not only for your waistline but your mind. Things that are high in carbs, fats, or are sugary or spicy are the worst. So basically, all the good stuff. But if you must eat something before bed then try a glass of milk. It contains tryptophan, which is a sleep-promoting substance. Other foods that are high in tryptophan include nuts and seeds, bananas, honey, and eggs. *I am not a nutritionist, but I know a few.
  3. Separate yourself from your electronics– I’m sure none of us not surprised to hear that phones have replaced T.V. for #1 distraction. Whether it’s games or shows, social media sites, or news articles, it’s all there. Everything to fill your mind and keep it running all night. Though there are many studies out there about when to ‘disconnect’ my rule is that once my kids are I bed I have 5 minutes to like, comment, and post.
  4. Prepare for the day the night before– Whether you have a fun trip to the beach, or a doctor’s appointment awaiting you preparing the night before is a most. Anytime I’ve had a busy day ahead of me I find myself tossing and turning the night before. when I haven’t looked up the directions, located my insurance card, or packed the beach bag.
  5. Say a prayer– This has been a part of my nighttime routine since I was a child. From lifting up the stresses of the day, to simply venting and asking for direction. It’s difficult to put it in words. But if you have experienced it you know that a kind of peace and calm falls over you. Nothing can replace or top it.

So here’s to a good nights sleep. God bless.
