jane austen

I know reading Jane Austen isn’t for everyone (though its hard for me to understand why). Being a hopeless romantic, who idealizes 1800 life; her books seem tailor made for me. I can’t help but lose myself in her stories. Even now, I currently have Sense and Sensibility playing in the background. My kids know the soundtrack of Pride and Prejudice by heart. It is my choice of music to play during their homework time.

What seems to make her stories timeless are the people she introduced to us. There are those who we root for, and those we laugh with (or at). Those we cry for, and those we can’t stand. We can relate to all their personalities, and understand the difficulties in their circumstance even though some situations are foreign to us.

I love the idea of gentlemen being formal, and women looking like ladies. I can’t imagine wearing a dress every day, through all the seasons, but I do love the “idea” of it. That balls and dancing were fashionable, and everyone wanted to attend and participate. Hearing live music echo through the halls of some grand estate lit by the light of a hundred candles. Young men and women would share flirtatious glances as they move across the floor. Yes, I can see where fairy tales may have been loosely based in truth.

The landscape in each story also adds to the romance and splendor. There are so many beautiful places for each scene to unfold. I wish I could own a painting of each one. The property of Pemberley, Norland Park and Barton Cottage, or the Estate in Hartfield in Surrey. From open fields of color and nature, to homes each with their own unique look and filled with generations of family secrets. Yup, I’m a sucker for this stuff.

But my favorite part about all of Jane Austen’s books are there endings. No matter the struggles, even when all seems lost the main characters always get their happy ending. And I’d say that this may tell us far more about the author herself.

I believe that writing is revealing and intimate. It can share more about the writer’s desires and fears then they may realize. For that, I want to thank you Miss Austen for sharing yourself so fully.
