As some of you may know from a previous post my husband, and I adopted two children (one of them is our son and our only boy). So my son and I don’t have the most traditional relationship beginnings, yet each day we become closer. And one area that has brought us closer came from an unlikely place; baseball.

I grew up as an only child, and my father wanted to make sure I was well rounded. So we went to many sports games and watched lol of ESPN. So I have always enjoyed sports though I was only ever on one swim team (passion has always been for the performing arts).

This season was our first time enrolling three of our kids into activities. We felt that it would benefit them, and I felt capable in my ability to run them all over town to makes practices, etc. And being that we were signing them up for winter sessions it would just be testing the waters, (winter sessions only run for three to four months). So both my son and myself were delighted to find out that there was a Little League near us doing a winter regulation. I had no idea how busy our life was about to become, and how much I’d get involved.

With each practice, I found myself becoming more and more vocal until I was finally on the field with his team. I’m the ‘unofficial’ team mom. At each practice, I assisted the coach with training the team, running drills and motivation. It’s been hard work for the both of us, but we love it.

Our son is a natural. Now I know all parents think their kids are the best at something but its a fact in our case. Since day one he volunteered to be one of the team pitchers, and he is hands down the BEST. Other parents have come up to me asking how long he has played, and they’re always surprised to find out that this is his first season. One mom even went so far as to have our son sign a ball for her stating; “It’s going to be worth millions one day.” She along with all the other positive support and feedback people have given our son has him motivated, playing full out at every game.

With all of that going on it’s sometimes hard to keep him grounded, or have him think about anything but baseball. I try to balance my support with a little caution. Reminding him to keep his mind open to all career possibles. You see he is already dreaming of being in the majors when he grows up. And I have told him that’s great, but he also needs to have a plan B. I’m glad that he has a natural physical talent, but there needs to be a brain behind it too.

I remind him of how difficult this journey could be, and that not everyone with talent gets into the major leagues. Of course, I don’t tell me this to scare him or change his mind. I just believe that when parents have their children focus on only one goal/dream it can have terrible ramifications. Heartbreak is unavoidable, but if he feels that he can be successful in a number of different areas, then it may lessen the blow if something doesn’t go in his favor. So I asked him, “What’s your plan B?” After some thought (on my son’s part) he came back to me with an answer. If a baseball career doesn’t work out then, he’d like to be a sports news anchor or announcer (gotta love this kid).

Quietly behind the scenes my husband and I are planning to get more involved because we do see greatness in our son. My husband may even try to be a coach next season, and if that’s the case then, I’ll become an official team mom. We want to give him the best opportunity possible while making sure he is having fun and enjoys just being a kid.

The love of baseball has grown in this house. And I believe it has helped our son on many levels to see all of us cheering him on. The look of proud on his face when he strikes someone out, or does an amazing play as the shortstop brings a smile to mine. He loves this sports, and you can tell by how brightly he shines.

So if you’re ever at the park and you hear a loud voice, coming from a small woman, who is cheering on her son…well know that it may be me 😀
