media no nos

I read a great article this week about what parents shouldn’t (but often do) on social media. I couldn’t help but see the faces of my friends/family members as I read (and yeah myself included). The article was a refreshing read and got me thinking. There are a lot of undesirable behaviors we’ve seem to have inherited over time when it comes to how we conduct ourselves online. Personally, off the top of my head I can think of 7 behaviors that should be wiped from social media altogether.

1. The One Upper. Remember the song that has the lyrics, “anything you can do I can do better, I can do anything better then you? Well, this individual embodies that song. Their always trying to outshine others (i.e. family/friends). If you were to post a picture of yourself finishing a 5K, then expect that this person will comment about ALL the races they’ve done.

2. My life is ‘perfect’ person. This person will never post anything negative going on in their life. Instead they’ll share all about their vacations, all the new things they’ve purchase, and heck if their kid potty trains easy then you’re going to hear about it (i.e. why does everyone say it’s so hard to teach their kids to use the potty…). The level of perfection this individual portrays is that of a celebrity.

3. The Debbie Downer. This person is also what I like to refer to as the human Eeyore. They’re the exact opposite from our person #2. Every little thing that doesn’t go their way is shared as though it was the end of the world. Bad hair day, stubbed their toe; it’s reason enough for them to share their hardships with all.

4. Mr. (or) Mrs. ‘TMI.’ Too much information is what the internet runs on, but when someone posts things you really didn’t need to know then they fall into this category. Obviously, they’re a little too comfortable having private conversations in an open forum or they simply don’t understand the term ‘boundaries.’

5. The Bully. They come in all shapes and sizes…and no one is safe from their venom. Some even go as far as tearing down children (from their appearance, style, etc.), and that sickens me. But since they have no problem doing the same things to so-called loved ones like you or I, are we really so surprise?

6. The Drama Queen (or King). Yes, it’s understandable that there are times when we all feel the need to vent, but putting all your personal business out there is just childish. I feel so embarrass when I’ve come across posts of two people ‘having it out’ for everyone to see. Seriously, is it too hard to fight via text/phone, or doing it the good old fashion way (face-to-face).

7. The Posting Machines. This person isn’t necessarily posting anything negative or trying to show off…but they post everything 24/7. From what they ate for breakfast, to the conversation they had about ‘nothing.’ If every minute of their day is recording online, (and if that’s not their primary job), then it’s too much. They not only overwhelming us with the amount of posts they share, but they also can be putting themselves in harms way by letting everyone know their every move.

We’re all guilty of these behaviors from time-to-time, but we need to be careful that these ‘sometime’ actions don’t become the way we normally conduct ourselves. What can we expect from the next generation if we don’t show self-control? We need to represent ourselves with some degree of class and maturity.
